Arcana: Fool
AU Backstory: This is a post-game version of Minato Arisato from Persona 3/Persona 3 FES/Persona 3 Portable - as such, the basic
backstory is primarily the same. The idea behind this AU is that whenever someone plays a NG+ cycle of any version of Persona 3, this Minato experiences it as a puppet of forces beyond his control (i.e., you).
AU Differences:
1. Has experienced over 1,675 replays of Persona 3 and as such is completely insane.
Canon Standing: The very end of the game, just as he closes his eyes and the credits roll.
Personality:
The Minato most of us know and love is a rather calm and passive individual. Unfortunately for this Minato, 1,675 years (or playthroughs) have quite radically changed him, and not always for the best.
For one thing, Minato, despite his apparent aloofness of his early years, is someone who treasures his friends. The meaning of his life is in 'bonds' - his friends - and for these bonds, he is willing to die, as the end of Persona 3 shows when he becomes the Great Seal. That's the core of his personality, and nothing can make him give that up. His loyalty to his friends is therefore absolute and he would never hesitate to help a friend in need, even if that puts his own life in danger.
His insanity does distort that essential core to a point, however – not only is he willing to die for his bonds, but he's become convinced that his bonds actually require his death. This does not disturb him as much as one would expect, but this ideal of noble self-sacrifice does not help his suicidal tendencies, as he believes dying is essential to the story of his life, and others', ending well.
Over a thousand six hundred years with no free will has also left him not quite as apt at figuring out other people as he used to be - he can figure out what someone is feeling well enough, but he generally can't tell why they're feeling that way. This is because, for all those years, the only people he could ever interact with always reacted the same way, and he himself only had a limited pool of responses despite how he himself actually felt. And however he acted, the SEES members admired him and respected his leadership. It didn't matter if he was an utter jerk or dating all the girls at once; they all had the same attitude toward him in the end. Same for his friends. As a result, he has some trouble interacting with society at large, as he is oblivious to the effect his now free-willed actions actually have on other people.
Another facet of his personality worth mentioning is his suicidal tendencies. During his years, he's been shot, stabbed, bludgeoned, burned, frozen, electrocuted and torn apart by wind. He's been exorcised, cursed, and even blasted away by Almighty. Not ever has one of these deaths freed him from his endless cycle of groundhog days. Even when he died as the Great Seal, he woke up the next day on the train to the dorm as if nothing had happened at all. He longs for a permanent death that his newfound free will now allows him to seek. Unfortunately, this aspect of him, combined with the difficulties he has behaving in society can lead him to attempt suicide in front of other people, without regards for how it might affect them.
The unchanging centuries have also left Minato with an appreciation for new sensations and little control over his emotions - as a result, whenever he encounters something new, he greets it with an outburst of manic joy, even if it's utterly inappropriate for the situation.
His insanity is compounded by the fact that, like the comic character Deadpool, in a way, Minato has the power to see narration, ooc comments, meme responses, etc. While he realizes these are not words spoken by the person, he can't help but sometimes interact with this additional information, even if it confuses or scares the other person. Even if he explains it as “I read the narration!”, few if any people understand what he actually means. More often then not, Minato ends up looking like an unbalanced, nosy telepath.
To sum it all up, Minato is, well, insane. His mind has been broken by his 1,675 years without free will, spent interacting with other people without free will, forbidden from doing anything but die, die and come back over and over again to relive the same events while horrifyingly self-aware. He had no mouth and he had to scream.
Now, his insanity rules all aspects of his life, from his lack of social grace to his loyalty to his friends to his suicidal tendencies to the use of his Universe power.
Revisions:
When he interacts with other people, it is often hard to predict what he'll do - the best you can hope for is a sort of cheerful curiosity. If you can prevent him from getting too excited, he'll often calm down enough to have a reasonably coherent conversation, albeit one generally filled with bizarre non-sequiturs and occasionally terrifying tangents. Very few things are capable of actually upsetting him, but he does have a few triggers mostly related to his ability to protect his friends - his inability to truly become the Great Seal being foremost.
He doesn't remember much of his life before the events of Persona 3 - he's no longer entirely sure it actually happened and as such has put the matter completely out of mind. If asked, he will generally look thoughtful for a few seconds before shrugging and saying he doesn't remember. The only thing he truly remembers from the brief time he had free will is that he had been planning on buying a ring for someone. Most days he thinks it was Mitsuru.
If - and this is a big if - you manage to catch him in one of his more lucid moments, you can see fragments of his original personality - a tendency towards introspection, a knack for ferreting out the motivations of others, and a deep loyalty. It will never be more than fragments, however - as Minato himself will cheerfully admit, he's never going to be sane again.
He is capable of change, however - simply being forced to actually interact with other people instead of picking from a list of predetermined responses will force him to learn at least a few social niceties. It's an uphill climb, however - both for him and for anyone that tries to help him.
Minato's most extreme reactions are saved for one person - Ryoji Mochizuki. As the centuries passed, he became fixated on Ryoji as the only person he was completely incapable of helping at all. If he has anything approaching a long-term goal, it is 'save Ryoji'. If there is anyone capable of truly getting through to him, it is Ryoji.
Key Personality Differences:
The most important differences are his strongly manic responses, his suicidal tendencies, the power of the Universe Arcana, and how all of those are tied to his absolute insanity.
Canon Powers:
Universe Arcana: The unparalleled power of the Universe Arcana, for which nothing is impossible. He mostly uses it to create flashy illusions, as well as summon small objects such as rubber duckies and tropical fruits out of nowhere. (Mind)
Alternate Form: Minato can switch between being male and female at will. It's a full physical change but does not affect his combat ability or mentality. (Mind)
Insanity: Minato's broken mind, combined with the power of the Universe Arcana, has destroyed the fourth wall for him. He uses this ability to interact with the narration - both his and other characters. It tends to come off as telepathy in practice.(Mind)
Canon Weapons|Items:
In Persona 3, Minato could equip every weapon aside from Koromaru's knives and Aigis' guns. Aside from Aigis' guns, Minato generally carries one to two weapons of the kinds used by his fellow members of SEES. He doesn't carry them on him, preferring to summon one as necessary. They all deal [Physical] damage aside from Laevaetine, which is a sword that deals [Fire] damage.
Canon Allies:
None.
Canon Baggage:
Lucifer's Blade (Sword, Physical)
Laevateinn (Sword, Fire)
Jack's Gloves (Hand Puppets, Physical)
Pesh Kabz (Knife, Physical)

Writing Sample3rd Person SampleAfter the initial exuberance calmed down and he got over the impulse to hug random strangers simply because he had never seen them before, Minato decided to explore Hinoto-Ri. Absently scraping at the back of his hand with one of Koromaru's old knives, he stared at the street around him, not really noticing the crowd around him grinding to a halt.
Spotting a clothing store, he grinned widely and set off toward it, tucking his knife in between the metacarpal bones. Upon reaching the shop (and what was with all those people raising such a ruckus?
rude), he blinked once when the hilt of the knife banged against the door handle as he reached for it.
"...when did that get there?"
He quickly stepped inside the store before drawing the knife free, wiping it clean on his shirt, and tucking it away with the rest of his things. Looking around, he spotted a clerk (standing stock still and staring, for some strange reason) nearby, so he put on his best grin and approached.
"Hiii! I need a new dress. Could you please direct me to the woman's section?"
The clerk, her eyes darting around wildly (wonder why that was happening? weird) shakily pointed behind Minato. Following her finger, he noticed the large sign saying 'Woman's Fall Clothing', just a few feet past where he had come in. Smacking himself on the forehead, he chuckled before turning back to the clerk.
"Haha, now I feel silly! Thanks for the help anyway, miss!"
A quick spin around and Minato was facing the right direction, her eyes alight with anticipation as she smoothed down her uniform skirt. Behind her, the clerk began to gibber quietly.
Man, why was everyone in this town so
strange? And why was her hand bleeding, anyway?
